St. Patrick’s Festival 2011

With today being dubbed “Blue Monday” and everyone feeling the January slump, we thought we’d cheer you up a bit with some fun news- the schedules have just been released for the 2011 St. Patrick’s Festivals! The paddy’s day excitement is to happen this year from Thursday March 17th to Sunday 20th.

St. Patrick’s Day falls this year on March 17th so make your way into the city centre from 12pm to view the Parade and the usual variety of floats and displays and soak up some of the atmosphere. The VIP grandstand tickets for now seem to be sold out for Parnell Square and Westmoreland Street. Also on the 17th there is the Gannon Cup University Boat Race between UCD and Trinity, starting at 9:30am from O’ Connell Bridge.

Friday 18th dips into Irish Culture with the Dublin Swell, with names from music, film, theatre and literature paying homage to Dublin and its creative citizens. Various artists will also provide entertainment for the event, taking place in the Convention Centre Dublin from 7:30pm. The St. Patrick’s Céilí is also being held, so throw on your dancing shoes and join in with the street festival- it’s bound to be a fun way to entertain the children!

Saturday 19th opens with the annual Treasure Hunt, a free event designed for all ages. Crack the clues and questions that point the way through Dublin city’s venues. It’s a really good way to view some of Dublin’s attractions, some which don’t usually allow access to the public. An event almost worthy of it’s own holiday is SkyFest. Starting at 6:30pm you can view the amazing fireworks display show and dance along to it’s musical set. Definitely a show not to miss!!

Last but not least, on Sunday 20th is the Big Day Out, a sort of festival within a festival. There will be street theatre, concerts and performances in Merrion Square with both Irish and International acts. A children’s fairground will also be there to keep the kids happy. The park will be holding some fun activities also so there is something for everyone.

More events and acts are sure to join the line-up for the weekend, we’ll keep you posted! What will you be attending?
